Learning Objectives

Materials
Instructions
- The week before this activity, assign students the following journal prompt:
- Write your testimonial. What have you experienced regarding social identities? How does this affect the person you are today? Try to focus on two social identities. This journal is preparation for next week. Plan to practice your testimonial out loud so it is no more than 5 minutes in length.
- Sharing
- Prepare students to share by noting that each person will share for five minutes. Everyone should listen actively but do not interrupt and do not ask questions or try to give advice. After each person has shared, pause for a minute or two to honor what has been shared. It can be helpful for the facilitator to go first.
- Reflection
- How did it feel to share your own testimonial about _____?
What issues did it bring up for you?
- Did your story, or the stories of people in this room, connect ______ to other social identities? In what ways?
- Was it hard to share a testimonial where you were a (target / agent)?
- Did you have assumptions about people in this room that were dispelled? Reified? In what ways will this help/hinder your ability to challenge & support each other in this group?
- Why do our personal stories matter?
- How can we show appreciation for each other today?
Variations
- Record and share video testimonials
